Medicare Supplement: predictable costs, any doctor.

A Medigap policy pays the deductibles and coinsurance that Original Medicare leaves behind. You keep Original Medicare, see any provider that accepts it, and add a separate Part D plan for prescriptions.

Why Plan G and Plan N are the ones people pick

Medigap plans are standardized by letter, so a Plan G from one carrier covers exactly what a Plan G from another does. The difference is price and the carrier's history of rate increases.

Plan G

Covers everything except the Part B deductible. After you meet that once a year, you have essentially no medical bills. The most popular choice for people who want the fewest surprises.

Plan N

A lower premium in exchange for small copays: up to $20 for some office visits and up to $50 for an ER visit that doesn't lead to admission. It also doesn't cover Part B excess charges, which are rare in most areas.

High-deductible Plan G

A much lower premium with a yearly deductible you pay before the plan kicks in. Good for people who want catastrophic protection and can handle routine costs.

Timing matters more than with any other plan

You have a six-month Medigap Open Enrollment Period that starts the month you are 65 and enrolled in Part B. During that window, carriers must accept you at the standard rate regardless of health.

Outside that window, most carriers ask health questions and can decline you, unless you qualify for a guaranteed issue right (for example, losing employer coverage or a Medicare Advantage plan leaving your area).

Some states, including a few we serve, have their own rules that make switching easier. We check this for you before recommending a change.

What you also need

  • A standalone Part D prescription plan, chosen each year during AEP
  • Optional dental and vision, since Medigap doesn't include them
