Questions we get every week

Short answers in plain English. If yours isn't here, call or text and a licensed agent will answer it.

Medicare

I'm turning 65 and still working. Do I have to sign up?

You can usually delay Part B without penalty if you have coverage through an employer with 20 or more employees. Most people still take Part A. Smaller employers and COBRA are treated differently, so check with us before your birthday month.

Is a $0 premium Medicare Advantage plan really free?

The plan premium can be $0, but you still pay your Part B premium plus copays and coinsurance when you use care. Every plan has a yearly out-of-pocket maximum, and that is the number to compare.

Can I keep my doctor?

With a Medicare Supplement, yes, anywhere in the country that accepts Medicare. With Medicare Advantage it depends on the plan's network, so we check your doctors before you enroll.

What is the difference between Medicare Advantage and a Supplement?

Medicare Advantage replaces how you receive Parts A and B through a private plan with a network and usually includes drugs. A Supplement keeps Original Medicare and pays the gaps, at any doctor that accepts Medicare, with a separate Part D plan.

What happens if I miss my enrollment window?

You may wait until the next Annual Enrollment Period and could owe a permanent late penalty on Part B or Part D. Some life events open a Special Enrollment Period. Call us and we will tell you where you stand.

Do you review plans I didn't buy from you?

Yes. Reviews are free whether or not you are our client. If your current plan is the best fit, we will tell you to keep it.

Health insurance under 65

How do I know if I qualify for a subsidy?

It depends on household income and size. Most people who buy their own insurance qualify for something. Our enrollment page shows your estimated savings in a couple of minutes, or we can check by phone.

I lost my job. How long do I have to get coverage?

Losing coverage opens a 60-day Special Enrollment Period. Enroll as soon as you can so there is no gap.

Is enrolling through Phil-Am more expensive than HealthCare.gov?

No. The price is set by the Marketplace and is identical. Agent help is free.

Do you offer something if I can't afford a Marketplace plan?

Yes. Depending on your situation, supplemental products like hospital indemnity or short-term medical can provide temporary protection. We will be honest about what they do and don't cover.

Can you help in Spanish?

Yes. We have Spanish-speaking licensed agents and a dedicated Spanish booking calendar.

Life and final expense

How much life insurance do I need?

A common starting point is 10 to 15 times your yearly income, plus debts and college costs, minus savings and existing coverage. Our quote tool walks through it.

Do I need a medical exam?

Often not. Many carriers approve term and whole life from an application and database check, with decisions the same day.

I never bought life insurance and I'm over 60. What should I do?

A final expense policy is usually the right answer. No exam, fixed premiums, and coverage of $5,000 to $40,000 to handle final costs so your family doesn't have to.

Can I buy a policy for my parent?

Yes, with their consent. You can be the payer and the beneficiary. Many families set this up together on one call.

Retirement and annuities

I'm worried I'll outlive my money. Can you help?

Yes. A fixed indexed annuity with an income rider can guarantee a lifetime paycheck, and an IUL can provide tax-advantaged supplemental income. We walk through the options in a free retirement review.

Are annuities safe?

Fixed and fixed indexed annuities guarantee your principal and are backed by the insurance company's claims-paying ability, which is why we only use carriers rated A or better. They are not liquid, so they should be sized to money you won't need soon.

What does it cost to work with you?

Nothing. The insurance company pays us. Your rate is the same whether you use an agent or not.
